born 1944
Philippa was born in Chantry Inlet. She began carving soapstone on her own in 1962, and has since taken workshops in wet carving and jewellery making at Arctic College. Phillipa is from a family of Baker Lake artists. Her father, Moses Nagyugalik, is a print-artist, printmaker and sculptor; her mother, Victoria Angrnaaluk, is a wallhanging artist, and her brother, Jimmy Nugyougalik, is a printmaker. Philippa’s husband, Thomas Iksiraq, is a printmaker and sculptor in Baker Lake. Phillipa has produced prints for many of the Baker Lake annual print collections. Prior to 1975 she worked exclusively in stencil, at which time she also began making silkscreen prints. In 1971 and 1975 her own drawings were included in the annual collections. She has printed many drawings by Kukiiyaut, and other artists such as Oonark and Anguhadluq. Frequently, she signs her work with her maiden name Aningrniq. - Excerpt courtesy Inuit Art Section, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), 1997.
